Phenomenological Stance

Deep insight cannot be acquired—not through learning.
Deep insight is given to us.
It shows us that it cannot be grasped.
With our intention alone, we cannot reach it.

There is a certain procedure through which we come to deep insight—
to the essence of what is inner.

What is essential can never be observed.

The most important things lie hidden beyond what can be seen; they are beyond observation.

The fundamental procedure for gaining this special kind of knowing is what I call the phenomenological stance
but forget the word.

You gain insight through a kind of surrender.

Instead of trying to grasp, you take a step back.
You open yourself and expose yourself to the situation.

For example, you expose yourself to a client.
You do not “look at” the client in the usual way;
for a moment, you let yourself be permeated—
illuminated—
by the person as they truly are,
by the situation as it truly is,
or by truth itself.

Something that is called truth.
For instance, you expose yourself to what is said about God— simply open yourself to it, without intention, and without fear.

And you wait.

And suddenly, an insight is given to you.
It comes from outside, not from within.
Suddenly you are seized by a connection—
a connection with what is essential.

This is the kind of knowing that supports this kind of work.

Hellinger described how a facilitator gains insights about a client, the truth and what to do in a family constellation session.

This way of working reminds me of Dao De Jing- LaoZi’s teaching. This is from chapter 48 of Dao De Jing.

「為學日益,為道日損。損之又損,以至於無為。」

In pursuing knowledge, one accumulates day by day.
In pursuing Tao, one decreases day by day.
Less and less is done,
until one arrives at Wu-Wei (無為,non-action).

It is the most challenging part with facilitating. As a facilitator, I understand my client wants something. However, we are not able to solve the issue from the known. At that point, my skills, philosophy, techniques I accumulated and the theories I learned had to be thrown to the side.

When I’m with the client, I tap into client’s family system and the knowing field and wait…
Wait for the truth and love to reveal themselves. When this connection is established, I was shown what to do.
